WA Premier Mark McGowan announces he will take on the Treasury portfolio following Labor’s unprecedented landslide win at Saturday’s state election.

WA Premier Mark McGowan has appointed himself as state Treasurer as part of a suite of changes to his previous ministry.
Key points:

  • Mark McGowan says his role as Treasurer may not be permanent
  • Roger Cook will remain Health Minister
  • John Carey becomes Housing Minister

Mr McGowan took over the Treasury role after former treasurer Ben Wyatt stood down from state politics at the recent election.
There was speculation Roger Cook would take on the role of Treasurer, but Mr Cook will stay on as Health Minister.
Mr McGowan hinted that might still be the plan after the COVID-19 pandemic was over.
“Other Premiers are also Treasurer around Australia currently, and other Premiers in history have been Treasurer,” Mr McGowan said.
“This may not be permanent. I will review this over coming years.
“We are in a pandemic and I thought that changing health ministers would be way too big a risk.
“I have been intimately involved with Treasury matters over the course of the last four years with Ben Wyatt.”
John Carey becomes Housing Minister
New Minister John Carey was handed the portfolios of Housing and Local Government.
Mr McGowan said he was confident Mr Carey could handle the role, just a week ahead of the rental moratorium ending with growing fears a shortage of affordable housing will see tenants facing eviction and possible homelessness.
