Hoërskool DF Malan’s refusal to allow LGBTQ pupils to commemorate “Pride Month” at the school has led to slanging matches between pupils and accusations of homophobia.

A storm is brewing at Hoërskool DF Malan in Belville, Cape Town, after it rejected a request by some pupils to commemorate “Pride Month” at the school, which sparked homophobic conflict among pupils at the school.
According to the school governing body (SGB), the principal, in consultation with their members, decided not to grant permission to a request for a Gay Pride celebration on school premises.
A group of LGBTQ pupils then opted to proceed with a lunchtime sit-in on the school’s field.
