‘Outside sort of lit up. Out the corner of my eye I thought it was lightning,’ he told 7News.
Mr O’Neil said it was a ‘big green light, just going through the sky, then it exploded’.
There was no loud bang, just an eerie silence.
He remembered the family home had installed security cameras and quickly went to check if it had recorded the blinding light.
The video was later uploaded to Facebook by his mother.
In the clip, the meteor appeared to be heading down towards the horizon before exploding into a ball of white light.
However, the flash of light wasnt from the meteor exploding but from the high speed it was travelling into the atmosphere.
Residents from Melbourne CBD also captured the moment, with one man uploading his footage to YouTube.
The clip has been viewed over 23,000 times with one person commenting they saw the meteor while walking their dog.
‘Was even more epic IRL, was lucky enough to be in the park walking the dog when it hit!!’, one person exclaimed.
The meteor was also sighted in NSW’s Central Coast and Tasmania.
